Is drinking red wine cool?

Have you ever tried drinking red wine cool? You might be surprised to learn that some grape varieties actually taste better when served a bit cooler, especially during warm summer days.

Let’s explore which reds can benefit from a quick chill in the fridge for about 20-30 minutes before serving. Lighter red wines with vibrant fruit flavours, low tannins, and lower alcohol content can be a refreshing choice compared to whites and rosés in the summer. Generally, the lighter and fresher the wine, the more enjoyable it is when chilled. Just remember not to over-chill your wine (aim for around 10-15°C), or you might lose some of its aromas and flavours.

Here are some great options to consider:

– Beaujolais, such as: Caves de Julienas-Chaintre Fleurie Cuvee Sept 2022
– Valpolicella, such as: Ca Dei Maghi Valpolicella Classico 2023
– Pinot Noir, such as: Laurent Miquel Solas Pinot Noir 2021
– Cabernet Franc, such as: Chateau de Plaisance Sur La Butte Rouge 2022
– Frappato, such as: Santa Tresa Organic Frappato 2022

My personal favourite red to serve cool is: Cantine Paolini Nerello Mascalese 2022

On the flip side, it’s best to skip chilling wines that are heavily oaked or have high tannin levels, as chilling can enhance these characteristics, making the wine taste drier.

Lastly, at any time of year, serving red wine at temperatures above 18°C is too warm, causing the flavours to become jammy, the structure to soften, and the alcohol to stand out more than it should.

…so ultimately, drinking red wine can be cool!
