An Amphora is a series of wines from the Zahel family – each year a single handmade 320 litre clay amphora is devoted to Riesling, Gruner Veltliner or Gemischter Satz (a wine made from a variety of grapes grown, harvested and fermented together). The wines are vinified biodynamically according to Demete guidelines with minimal intervention and offer the longest maceration contact in the Zahel portfolio.
Produced from a small vineyard in Vienna’s southwest, this Gewurztraminer has the minerality of the local terroir, three days of skin contact and ten months ageing on lees to bring structure to this aromatic varietal. As with Alex Zahel’s wines, this is unfiltered so hazy in appearance, has a spicy aromatic nose with hints of pineapple and apple, is dry with a fruity and spicy finish. Delicious now but it would evolve further over the next five years. Drink with cheese, fish or duck.
